If your Windows Phone is not detected by Zune and WPConnect

Today as I unboxed my Samsung Focus Flash, I noticed that once I plugged it in, Windows correctly detected it as ZeBond Flash (name of the device, by the way). However, neither Zune, nor WPConnect could recognize a working Windows Phone device that I can connect to. That means – no media sync and no deployment through Visual Studio.

I opened Device Manager, and to my surprise noticed that the device was using an older version of the required driver:

All I had to do is click on Update Driver, select Browse my computer for driver software and then – Let me pick from a list of devices on this computer. There were several options available:

4.8.2345.0 is what needs to be installed – it should the same as the version of the installed Zune software.

So if you encounter a situation like this, check the driver version.

I should had read this post two months ago! I had a problem in registering my phone for development and the reason was the driver. My problem was more subdle because Zune was working fine.
